about

Slow and heavy is the creed of Rotterdam based band Katie Kruel. This wild quartet performs stage rituals in traditions of Black Sabbath and Melvins: heavy and ruthless guitar riffs and a slow and heavy pounding rhythm section.

Front woman Nathalie Houtermans is the high priestess, who looks unapproachable and in control at one moment and then gets down growling in the musical escalations that she invokes in her band and vice versa. In her lyrics, which are as emphatically as sultry, she examines the thin line between reason and insanity, the intellectual and the physical.

Although hard to pinpoint, the music marks influences of sludge, stoner and doom, as well as hints of early deathrock. The themes of the lyrics and (mostly) warm, laid back style of singing, might show Gothic Americana elements, but you better forget the stifling atmosphere of the U.S. South: Katie Kruel’s realm is firmly set within the oppressive heat of Northern Europe’s darkest urban underbelly!

Katie Kruel was founded by Nathalie Houtermans and guitarist Hans Dirksen-Smits, both with a background in (post)punk and noise bands such as The Bride (Stripped Bare). Completed with the former rhythm section of underground band Spasmodique, they debuted with a first album in 2013. In that year their song 'Rat of Noises' was also released on the double album 'Punk's not Dead'. After replacing the rhythm section (due to the reunion of Spasmodique), the EP 'Curse' was released in 2016. With current band members Martin Kooij (ex-Asrai, Vanity 4) on bass and multi-instrumentalist Jacob van der Linden on drums, a new era has arrived for Katie Kruel, with an even heavier sound, both on stage as well as the new album ‘The Rise and Fall of Cannibal Planet’.
